SUMMARY:Bee-Friendly Garden - How to Create a Bee Sanctuary in Your Backyard
DESCRIPTION:This class is presented by Guild member Emily Bondor through Cabrillo Extension. \nWould you like to create a beautiful garden and also do your part to save the bees\, all in one? A huge part of keeping honey bees healthy is to ensure they have the plants they need to survive available to them year round. Join Emily for this one-day workshop on bee-friendly gardening by starting the day at Cabrillo for a discussion and presentation on native plants\, drought tolerant plants\, perennial and annual flowering plants and basic bee-friendly landscape design. We’ll then break for lunch and make our way to Native Revival Nursery\, just a few minutes from campus\, where we will walk the grounds to see\, smell and touch some recommended plants for your very own Bee Friendly Garden. This class helps us all save the bees and make our gardens more beautiful at the same time! \nStudents go home with a small bee-friendly garden starter kit from Native Revival Nursery\, a plant list that breaks down the best bee plants by size\, annual blooming schedule\, place of origin and water needs. \nSat.\, April 8\n11 am – 2 pm\nRoom: Horticulture 5001\nRegister by Feb. 27: $50\nRegister after Feb. 27: $58 \nplus $25 materials fee payable at registration \nEmily Bondor is a bay area Beekeeper and Educator. Her expertise is in promoting responsible honeybee genetics and breeding queens from locally adapted genetic stock. She works in Napa Valley managing bee-hives and is currently pursuing Master Beekeeping Classes through the Honeybee Lab at UC Davis.

SUMMARY:Save the Bees! How to Support Bees in our Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Guild member Emily Bondor will be presenting this class at Native Revival Nursery. \nThe class will be focused around the co-evolution of flowering plants and bees and the importance of pollinators to our landscape and our food system. Honey bees are unique among bee species\, as they’re a “superorganism” with a social caste. Most other native bees are largely solitary in nature. Emily will do a brief lesson on honey bee biology\, caste structure and roles within the hive. The main focus and intention of the class will be “how to support bees in our landscape”. By focusing on forage\, we will support not only honeybees but native bees\, too. \nThe takeaway will include a list of some of the best bee forage plants for your garden\, some of which will also be California natives. In truth\, in order to “save the bees”\, we need to think holistically and regeneratively\, with a focus on biodiversity and habitat creation and restoration. We need farmers\, gardeners\, orchardists\, ranchers planting pasture and landscapers focused on flowers! \nSince we won’t be going in a hive during the class\, Emily will bring her beekeeping tools and equipment\, wax combs\, and some homemade bee products. \n*If the class is a success\, we can run it again at Native Revival and/or organize a follow-up class with participants who want to do a “live hive dive” workshop with Emily at one of her apiaries in the Santa Cruz area.

SUMMARY:Backyard Beekeeping and Honeybee Biology
DESCRIPTION:This class is presented by Guild member Emily Bondor through Cabrillo Extension. It is a 4-Saturday course starting on 9 April 2016. Course hours are from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM each Saturday. \nWhether you are interested in learning sustainable backyard beekeeping practices\, or just want a better understanding of how these delicate\, intricate creatures benefit us and our planet\, you will leave this class a-buzz with new energy! Over the course of the class we will cover hive structure\, colony dynamics and delve into basic honeybee biology. We will discuss the history of beekeeping\, from honey production to pollination contracts\, and discuss current trends (and rifts) in colony management practices. Weather permitting we will take a field trip to Emily’s Apiary in Santa Cruz for a real-life “hive dive”. By the end of the course\, students who are interested in obtaining their own hive will have a good working understanding of equipment\, tools\, management practices and bee biology\, and how we can work together to support these very vital pollinators. \nThis class is appropriate for adults with little to no experience in keeping bees. \n4 Sat.\, April 9 – 30\n10:00 am – 11:30 am\nRoom: 707 \nRegister by Feb. 29: $68\nRegister after Feb. 29: $72 \nEmily Bondor is a bay area Beekeeper and Educator. Her expertise is in promoting responsible honeybee genetics and breeding queens from locally adapted genetic stock. She works in Napa Valley managing bee-hives and is currently pursuing Master Beekeeping Classes through the Honeybee Lab at UC Davis.
